Too many plugins is the #1 cause of slow, bloated WordPress sites. Here's a framework to keep only what earns its place.
The 6-question plugin test
Before adding any plugin, ask:
- 1.Does it solve a problem I actually have?
- 2.Is it actively maintained and updated?
- 3.Does it have good reviews and reasonable installs?
- 4.Is it well-coded (light, no bloat)?
- 5.Can I achieve this without a plugin?
- 6.Is the performance cost worth it?
The 12 worth keeping in 2026
A lean, high-value core: a security plugin, a caching plugin, an SEO plugin, a backup solution, one form plugin, and a few essentials — nothing more.
The takeaway
Aim for 12–15 quality plugins total. If an install makes your site slower and you're not sure it's earning its place, deactivate it and run a performance check.
